What are Cavities?

 In News
You know to watch out for them and to eat less candy to avoid them, but do you know what a cavity is? Cavities are essentially tooth decay. This is when specific bacteria produces acid that destroys the tooth’s enamel. This happens as a result of our lifestyle choices – what we eat, how we take care of our teeth and the fluoride content in our water/toothpaste. There are three different types of cavities. Coronal cavities (the most common) occur on the chewing surfaces of our teeth or in between teeth. Root cavities are another type of cavity, where the gums have receded, leaving an exposed part of the tooth which is more susceptible to cavities. The third type of cavity is known as recurrent decay. This happens around existing fillings or crowns, as these areas accumulate plaque easily. Cavities are serious! If you leave them untreated they can destroy your tooth and result in infections or an abscess. If this happens, it can only be treated by surgery or extraction! Be sure to take good care of your teeth and check in with your dentist in Grand Falls-Windsor to ensure you are cavity-free! For more cavity tips, contact us at Exploits Valley Dental Care today!
