Gum Disease: Three Stages

 In News

While it is essential to know the general symptoms of gum disease or periodontal disease, learning the three stages of this condition allows you to understand the available treatment options. Gum disease is the inflammation of the gums that, if left untreated, can affect the bone that supports your teeth. Here, at Exploits Valley Dental Office, we help our patients understand their diagnosis before recommending a treatment or dental procedure.

Here is an overview of each of the stages of gum disease:

  • Gingivitis – This is the first and earliest stage of gum disease. Without regular brushing and flossing, plaque build-up produces toxins which irritate gum tissue and cause inflammation. We advise a patient with gingivitis to visit a dentist as soon as possible to treat and reverse the condition.
  • Periodontitis –This is the second more advanced stage of gum disease when the supporting bone and tissues are irreversibly damaged.  Without treatment, pockets will begin to form below the gum line. Plaque will be easily trapped in these chambers, which can affect facial bones and tissues. Proper treatment is necessary to prevent further damage to your oral cavity.
  • Advanced Periodontitis –This is the third stage of gum disease when dental bones and supporting tissue structures are destroyed. Teeth become loose and will eventually fall out. Advanced Periodontitis has a significant impact on your overall health, facial structure, bite, ability to speak, eat and chew properly. Immediate intervention is needed to manage this serious condition.

If you are suffering from any of the above stages our experienced dental team at Exploits Valley Dental in Grand Falls-Windsor are equipped with the knowledge to help. Please call to reserve your appointment.
